What is the Bard PowerPort Defect?

The Device

The Bard PowerPort is an implantable port catheter used to deliver chemotherapy, dialysis, and long-term IV medications directly into the bloodstream. It's designed for patients requiring frequent or long-term venous access.

  • • Manufactured by Becton Dickinson (BD/Bard)
  • • Implanted under the skin, typically in the chest
  • • Connected to a catheter leading to a major vein
  • • Used for chemotherapy, dialysis, TPN

The Defect

The PowerPort catheter material contains barium sulfate for x-ray visibility. However, this additive causes the catheter material to degrade and become unstable:

  • Micro-cracks form in the catheter surface
  • Bacteria colonize in microscopic crevices
  • Biofilm develops that resists antibiotics
  • Recurrent bloodstream infections (sepsis) occur
  • Catheter fracture may require emergency surgery

Signs Your PowerPort May Be Infected

Fever & Chills

Sudden high fever, shaking chills, especially shortly after chemotherapy or dialysis treatments

Port Site Redness

Swelling, warmth, redness, or drainage around the port site

Recurrent Infections

Multiple bloodstream infections despite antibiotics and port changes

Catheter Breakage

Fragment or fracture detected in catheter, often requiring surgery to remove

Septic Shock

Life-threatening drop in blood pressure, organ failure, ICU admission

Compensation for Bard PowerPort Infections

Multi-District Litigation (MDL)

Bard PowerPort cases are currently consolidated in federal Multi-District Litigation (MDL) to streamline pre-trial proceedings. This allows:
